The Charleston Forum invites you to our first in-person event since 2019!
Join us on Friday, June 10 at 6:00 PM for panels discussing race, history, and public policy moderated by Congressman Jim Clyburn and UofSC Interim President Dr. Harris Pastides.
The Charleston Forum, which strives to provide the community with ways to move forward together on otherwise divisive issues involving race, has hosted multiple successful events in years past featuring local and national leaders. This year, the Forum is excited to welcome Congressman Jim Clyburn and University of South Carolina Interim President Harris Pastides as moderators of the two panels.
The first panel, moderated by Congressman Clyburn, will consist of a group of historians who will delve into topics such as the nature and importance of public history; changes in the public history landscape of our state and region since the murders at Mother Emanuel; Charleston’s current public history landscape; ways in which the current public history landscape might be improved; and ways in which historians and public officials might work together to better their communities.
The second panel, moderated by President Pastides, will bring together a group of elected officials to discuss the options for how we address these issues in the future, with consideration of South Carolina’s Heritage Act, recommendations of the History/Culture Committee of Charleston Special Commission, and the role of state government in shaping the public history of South Carolina going forward.
Join us outside Morris Brown AME Church ahead of the forum for food starting at 5:00pm
